357: 3 List Building Strategies for 2016

The 3 Critical Components for List Building

How important is it to have a list building strategy? Very important!  In this episode of the Social Media Marketing Happy Hour, Dawn and Traci delve deeper into list building. We want to impart this knowledge, especially because this 2016, to be able to compete and win in the marketing arena, you have to step up your game. To get closer to your goal, you have to include the 3 different types of list building for marketing your business.

The 3 critical components of list building:

  • Invisible Audiences
  • Social Followings
  • Email Lists

Build your invisible list.

“In 2016 and forward – the companies that build the biggest invisible list win!” — we can’t stress this enough!

This is the reason why we think you should be building your list before you even need it. Because eventually, you will need it. A lot build it out of need, but you should be wise enough to prepare ahead of time.

Build your audience or social following.

If Facebook is your main social media platform for marketing, you should set up your Facebook tracking pixel. A tracking pixel is a piece of code that’s very powerful and allows you to track everyone that hits your website. If you have an existing website or even if the only thing you have is a lead capture page, that's where you put the pixel. You can use it on Facebook, Twitter, Google Adwords, Youtube, Adroll, Perfect Audience and lots more. Through this, you are able to follow people in the interwebs. By the way, before anything else, see to it that you have a web property of your own so that you can get your pixels on your website.

Here’s a treat! Since we think Facebook is the bomb when it comes to tracking pixels, we’ll tell you how to set it up!

How to Install Facebook Tracking Pixels
  1. Go into your Ads Manager on Facebook.
  2. Find the pulldown menu that says “Tools”.
  3. Click on “Audiences”
  4. Go to “Create a Custom Audience”.
  5. You’ll see 3 options: Select “Website Traffic”.
  6. As a baseline, you should create a main tracking pixel. One central pixel is key.
  7. Choose Website Custom Audience
  8. Make it 180 days to track 6 months of traffic, for a start.
  9. Label it with you company name + Main Tracking Pixel.
  10. This will produce a piece of code where you can put on the header section of your website, lead capture pages, or anything that takes tracking code.

You see, it may sound complicated, but it’s really that simple!

Another thing you need to have an audience growth strategy – a strategy to grow your social followings. An ongoing small Facebook Like strategy to grow your Facebook following strategically is one of the best ways to go.

It will help bring more audience. And we all know that there are huge benefits to having a thriving audience.

Build your email list.

Just so you know, email marketing is not dead – it's not as critical today but it’s going to be very useful, especially when you want to close a sale! The fact is, email marketing is 70x more effective at closing a sale than Facebook and Twitter. You use social media platforms as a funnel where you pull traffic in, but the final step is to email them. If you start selling on social media, chances are they’ll ignore it.

Here’s a rundown on the process so you’ll have a clearer idea of what happens:
  • There’s this cold traffic coming in to social media properties that will…
  • send them to your website and…
  • allow you to build an invisible audience, then…
  • you can give an offer for something free which leads to…
  • Getting them on your list and…
  • you’ll finally have the ability to sell them things and make offers!

Hopefully now you understand the importance of building your social audiences and building an invisible list.
