Tips and Resources for Copywriting Right

Since the Happy Hour Girls were running a little late on studio time, Traci went on Periscope and asked some of our followers what they wanted to hear about on the podcast. So for this episode of the Social Media Marketing Happy Hour, Dawn and Traci answer one of the questions which is about copywriting. The girls share some tips as well as their favorite resources to learn this valuable skill. If you've struggled with copywriting for landing pages, sales letters, emails or even just Tweets, you'll want to listen in to this podcast!

Becoming good at copywriting is probably the most profitable skill you can learn when it comes to marketing. It's not about becoming a master, but it's really about dedicating some time to practice this skill – and the best way to practice is to just do it!

Here are some awesome tips and resources to get you started and fueled up in your copywriting journey:
Copywriting for Lead Magnets

Numerous people asked for copywriting tips, especially for lead magnets. One of the things we've noticed when we look at people's stuff, especially with lead magnets and lead capture pages is that people tend to sell what it is they are selling, like selling the widget. But what you really want to be doing is focus on your avatar and how you make them feel.  In order to do this, you should talk about the outcome. It's like a quote that goes something like this, “Nobody who bought a drill actually wanted a drill, they wanted a hole.” Talk about what you want to get out of that widget and not what the widget actually does.

Powerful Words

Copywriting is about influence and persuasion. It is all about learning how to sell with your words. Even if you're not that great of a writer, using powerful words will definitely power up your writing.  For example, the pronoun “you” is a very powerful word in copywriting. Like instead of saying “download the free report”, you can say “download your free report”. When you do this, it makes it more personal and it will make that connection to the reader.

Awesome Copywriting Resources

When you get started, you try to absorb everything you possibly can from great resources. Traci and Dawn did the same and here are some of the wicked awesome resources that proved to be very helpful to them.

Twitter for Short Copywriting

One of the best ways to get better at short copywriting is Twitter. Period. You have to get your point across on just 140 characters or less. Even if you're not reaching anybody, the practice is invaluable. It is a very powerful skill to develop.

Inspiration from Magazines

Magazines always know what sells. They have great headlines and you'll see examples of awesome copywriting there. Scan through magazines that are in your niche. For a lead magnet copy, that probably is a great place to start.
