341: Targeting The Right People

The Importance of Knowing Who Your Target is For Your Business

Are you targeting the right people for your business? If you find it difficult to persuade people to use your services or to buy a product you are selling, maybe the problem isn’t your offer. It could be that you are talking to someone who just doesn’t get it or who isn’t ready for whatever solution you have.

In this episode of the Social Media Marketing Happy Hour, Dawn and Traci talk about the importance of targeting the right people and how it can make your business more fun to run and also faster to build up! You want to be able to get your message out to the right people and move from strangers to interested leads, and ultimately to customers.

The Right Target

You don't need your bestfriend to take your products or use your services… they don't get it because they might not be your target market, or not your avatar. As soon as you can get yourself out of that feeling that you need to convince people that what you have is valuable and you start going to the people that already know it is, the better you'll feel about your business.

Even with a very low ad budget, you will get good results as long as you have the right message + right audience + right follow-up. But like we said, there are going to be some people who just won't get it and who don't believe in the fact that online marketing is effective. No matter how many ads you run and email campaigns you send out, if they are going out to the wrong avatar, you won’t get leads. So be sure you are targeting the exact people who will understand and who see the importance of what you’re offering.

Social Media Marketing and Ads

Many still think Facebook marketing and Facebook ads don't work. You can save yourself the frustration, time, and effort by talking ONLY to the people who get it. Facebook is actually able to target a specific group of people in a specific area. This is great if your intention is to localize your reach. Facebook, in our opinion, is probably the best place to run social media ads since it has around 1.3 billion active users. Twitter is also great from an organic lead standpoint since you can get a ton of traffic and retarget them. Other social media platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, to name a few, can also be very effective depending on the kind of business you have.

With Facebook ads, you can do so much more without breaking the bank! Say for example you are sending a person to a lead capture page, then that person opts-in, then she keeps on getting the same ads that prompts her to opt-in. It gets bothersome for them. But with Facebook advertising, specifically website custom audiences, you can configure it to stop advertising to them and start marketing the offer you have, once they've opted in.

TV Ads vs. Online Ads

At present, more and more video are being watched on mobile devices compared to television. which means that you have a better chance of getting in front of your customer with an online advertisement than you do with a TV ad. Even small business owners are able to grab hold of this opportunity because it's very doable and super affordable. Current technology has made that possible.

Retargeting Ads

You can still run cold traffic to an opt-in page, but what's even better is you can send cold traffic to content and then people who read that content can then be retargeted with offers. Those that have read the content have implied that they are interested because they read it, right? They wouldn't take the time to read your blog post if it's something they are not interested in.

You can also use Facebook for retargeting ads. Like if a person has shown interest, but hasn’t opted in yet, they can easily be reached because of the targeting features that specifically talk to those people.

Must-Have Tools

If you don’t have it yet, you should seriously think of getting Infusionsoft or Ontraport. These tools allow you to set up rules based on website visits. You can send special emails, special email sequences, and even text message to your targets. Happy Hour uses Ontraport and we’ve replaced a lot of stuff with it like our membership software, email marketing, lead capture pages, landing pages and sales pages. By using Ontraport, we have replaced the other stuff and eliminated other monthly costs.

Because of all the tools and technology available, it’s easier to put everything together and run them more logically and predictably. When you are running something and you have some predictability to it, you feel more secured with your investment. It has become so much more affordable for small business owners to market this way and be more competitive.

When you target the right people, when you use the right tools, when you understand the right way to do it, it  makes a big difference in the way you see your business, and it will make things run faster and more smoothly too.
