331: Blogging & Social Media

The Importance of Blogging in Your Social Media Marketing

Does your business have a blog? If you don’t yet, make sure that you have a blog up and running! In today’s episode of the Social Media Marketing Happy Hour, Dawn and Traci talk more about why blogging and creating valuable content is a crucial part of your social media marketing strategies. Having a blog, a website, a home base should be one of your priorities.

First of all, we’d like to make this clear: Blogging is not dead. Yes, it has changed over the years and has caused marketers to change their strategies, but one thing that remains the same with it is that if you have good content in your blog, it gets shared! We don’t think there’s any type of business that can’t benefit from having a blog. Even a brick and mortar store can benefit from it.

Here are a few important things to take note of when it comes to blogging and social media:

You should have your own platform.

It's essential to have your own platform and your own content that no one can take away from you. If you don't have your own platform, what you've set up on could be gone just like that. For example your Facebook page, you don't own that. God forbid if something happens to Facebook, whatever content you've put on there will disappear with it because you don't have control over it. But if you have your own website or blog, you have the power to put whatever you want, whenever you want to. Our preferred choice when it comes to a self-hosted blog is WordPress.org.

People are constantly looking for valuable content.

A lot of social media users on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Youtube and many more, post or share content. The content could be an image, a video, an article, a tips, infographics, or anything that is, in some way, useful to them in their life. If they find it useful, entertaining, interesting, educational, people just love to share it like crazy!

Imagine if you were the creator of that content, think of how many people you would be able to reach because it was shared. Nowadays, it isn't enough to just create images and share them. What's taking social media marketing by storm is having valuable content that people would want to share – content that showcases something you do or know that can benefit others who consume it.

You have to have something to market.

You can't just market your “buy from me” page. If you are sending traffic to a lead capture page, do you see people sharing your lead capture page? Not likely. But if you shared wicked awesome content, it will attract more and more people, and it will be easy to target ads to those people.  Since they've shown some degree of interest by visiting your blog, they are more likely to become leads. From cold traffic, they become warm traffic!
